Career Opportunities and Professional Paths

The PhD Program in Physics prepares highly qualified professionals for scientific careers within universities and national research institutions (such as CNR, INFN, ENEA, ENI, INGV), as well as in the private sector, including industries specializing in electronic components, information technology, telecommunications, economics, and finance, particularly within R&D divisions of industrial enterprises.

The program also supports career development at major international research facilities — such as nuclear reactors and synchrotrons — active in the fields of condensed matter physics, nuclear and particle physics, and in international laboratories focused on fundamental and applied research in solid-state physics, quantum technologies, laser physics, and plasma physics.

In light of the strong applied competencies acquired during the doctoral training, graduates are also well-equipped to work in healthcare institutions requiring advanced expertise in radioactivity, imaging techniques, and physics applied to medical diagnostics.
Further career opportunities include roles within cultural heritage authorities and institutions dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of cultural and environmental assets, as well as organizations involved in atmospheric process monitoring (meteorology and oceanography), including numerical simulation of complex evolutionary phenomena and the assessment of natural and anthropogenic risks.

An additional professional pathway is consultancy in safety-related and healthcare contexts, particularly following the recent establishment of the Italian Professional Order of Physicists.
